Plastics are baled at the Materials Recovery Facility and are then transported to our re-processor Alternative Waste Solutions. Plastics are processed in their Hemswell sorting plant.
Here plastics are chipped, melted and cleaned and made into new products including polyethylene bins liners and carrier bags; PVC sewer pipes; flooring and window frames; building insulation; compact disc cases; fencing and garden furniture; water butts; garden sheds and composters; seed trys; anoraks and fleece jackets; fibre filling for sleeping bags and duvets; and a variety of office accessories.

Did you know? 150 million plastic carrier bags are used in the UK each week - they can take up to 500 years to decay in landfill. Try to reduce the amount of plastic products you use!
The issues surrounding degradable plastics are complex and often confusing. Anthony Roberts (Public affairs executive of the British Plastics Federation) sums up the situation when he writes, 'The most important distinction to understand is the difference between bidegradable plastics and bio-plastics. Biodegradable plastics can be composted or biodegraded, whereas bio-plastics are plastics which come from biomass. Biodegradable plastics are not always bio-plastics and futhermore bio-plastics are not always degradable.' (p8, Resource Management & Recovery, issue 121: 15 June 2007).
