Residents in and around Marlborough will now be able take their recyclable waste to use a new, purpose-built household recycling centre (HRC) at the Salisbury Road Business Park.
The HRC was officially opened by cabinet member for waste Toby Sturgis on March 23 at 11am.
The centre is part of Wiltshire Council’s strategy to increase recycling in the county and reduce the amount of rubbish which currently goes to landfill.
It will be run by waste disposal contractor Hills Waste Solutions Ltd.
Toby Sturgis said: “We have worked really hard to get a HRC in Marlborough, and I am proud we are now able to open one.
“I hope it will make a huge difference to the recycling habits of people in the local area.”
People can take a variety of recyclable material to the centre including plastic bottles, cardboard, paper, glass, cans, textiles, garden waste, timber, metals, electrical appliances, drinks cartons and household batteries.
The site’s opening hours will be in line with the county’s other HRCs:
Winter (November 1 to March 31), Monday to Sunday from 9am to 4pm.
Summer (April 1 to October 31), Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 9am to 5pm and Wednesday, Thursday from 9am to 7pm.
It is expected at least 70 percent of the material taken to the site by local residents will be recycled.
The opening will mean the recycling site at George Lane car park will be closed, as the facilities there will be transferred to the new HRC where they will be much more efficient. The HRC will accept all the household materials currently collected at George Lane, and many more.
The George Lane site will close about six weeks after the opening of the new HRC. This will give residents time to get used to the new arrangements. The details will be advertised by a notice on site. Marlborough’s other small recycling sites, Marlborough College and Marlborough Town Football Club, will remain open. The new fortnightly kerbside collection of plastic bottles and card is due to start in the Autumn.
