Ways to cut down on food waste
So how can we cut down on the amount of food waste we throw away?

Shopping
• Work out a menu and a shopping list for each week and buy for that. At the end of the week, the fridge and cupboards are fairly empty, so little or nothing is wasted. Only buy what you need!
• Buy items with the longest sell-by date - that way, if you change your minds about eating it, then there’s still time to eat it before it goes off
• If you do decide to go for a ‘buy one get one free’ offer freeze the other portion straight away or make double the meal, cook and freeze.
• Go to my local butcher, fishmonger or green grocers where you can buy the portion you need so there’s no waste
Making the most of food
• Arm yourself with some good leftover recipes.
• Make packed lunches with the leftovers.
• Follow portion guidelines on packets.
• Weigh out ingredients such as rice and pasta – these are among the items most commonly thrown out often due to preparing too much
• Use your freezer – and make sure you clearly label everything!.
• Buy small food boxes to freeze leftovers rather than sticking them in the fridge as you probably won’t ‘eat later’ and this also avoids over eating for the sake of it.
• Cut cakes into one portion slices before freezing so that you can defrost as required. Great for lunch boxes as they keep cool in the lunchbox and defrost by lunchtime.
• Cut bread in half and freeze one half until needed.
• If you have some fruit that is going soft, then use it to make a fruit smoothie or a fruit puree which can be added to ice cream for a delicious dessert.
Store food properly
• Keep your fridge at the right temperature (1-6 degrees Centigrade) and keep it well organised to avoid out of date food lurking at the back
• Freeze herbs and stock. Once frozen into cubes, transfer ‘blocks’ to freezer bags and store in freezer until needed.
• Keep a variety of storage bags. Bag clips are great for sealing open packets.
• Stock upon good storage containers with well fitting lids to store leftovers, grated cheese, sandwiches and fruit.
• Get yourself a smoothie maker or use your mixer to make fruit smoothies and soups
Cook leftovers
• Leftovers might sound dull but we love them. Imagine cooking once and then having a second tasty meal in the wings partially prepared to 'eat twice' so saving you time and money.
• Refrigerate cooled leftovers promptly in shallow containers, covering them well so they don't dry out in the fridge, and using them within 2-3 days.
