Recycling Centres prepare for bank holiday bonanza

People in Wiltshire are being asked to make full use of the longer opening hours at household recycling centres (HRCs) this month.

Traditionally May is a busy time for the county's waste and recycling services as people use the bank holidays to spring clean their houses, tackle some DIY and get hard at work on their gardens.

Andy Conn, Wiltshire County Council's waste services manager, said: "The ten household recycling centres are now open for longer with late openings in mid week so people don't need to wait until the weekend to make a trip.

"There are some two dozen different items people can recycle at the HRCs and year on year we're seeing an increase in the amount of material they handle.

"We're pleased that people want to use this service and we're continually working with our contractor, Hills Waste Solutions Ltd, to improve these facilities.

"That's why we are putting in place improved signage at the sites so people have clear information about what they can recycle and where. It should speed up the time taken by visitors and ensure items can be processed quicker."

The household recycling centres can take everything from car batteries to fluorescent light tubes. Textile banks are great places for old clothes while there are also facilities for rubble, timber and unused paints. They all now take chipboard and MDF for recycling and there are new collection bins for electrical and electronic items, to improve their recycling as part of a national scheme.

Eight of the HRCs stay open until 7pm on Wednesday and Thursday evenings and 5pm on other evenings. The remaining two at Warminster and Salisbury are open until 8pm every day.

The bank holiday weekends in particular could be very busy, so people may find their visit more convenient if they choose a weekday instead. Also visits can be quicker if people sort their waste before setting off for the site. These simple measures will reduce queues at the busy times.

The bank holidays also mean changes to the kerbside black box collection for residents in North Wiltshire, West Wiltshire and Salisbury only. Residents in Kennet will have their boxes collected as normal.

There will be no collection on bank holiday Monday on May 5. Instead that will be collected on Tuesday May 6. Tuesday's collection will move to Wednesday May 7 and so on with Friday's collection moving to Saturday. The service resumes as normal the following week.

The same changes occur for the second bank holiday on May 26 with Monday's collection moving to Tuesday and so on. Again, the service returns to normal the following week.
