Composting at home - Which compost bin is best for me?
|
You can make compost from a simple heap on the ground which can be covered with plastic or old carpet to keep it moist.
Most people use some form of container as it looks neater, is easier to manage and speeds up the composting process.
Remember a compost bin need only keep the rain out and the heat and moisture in. Try to make sure that your compost bin is secure and completely sealed off from pests.
1. Use wire meshing with wooden stakes at each corner. Line with cardboard and top with a piece of carpet.
2. Use an old dustbin – cut the bottom out, turn it upside down and replace the lid.
3. Build a composter using breeze blocks, creating a slated front
4. Use an old coal bunker
5. Old pallets tied at the corners with another as a base acts as an effective composter
6. Why not use an eleven foot length of 2” x 4” x 36” welded, medium-guage fence wire joined to form a cylinder
